ZinA “Afreeque” - 11/8 Records – nr. Cat. 09/2009
ZinA is a band led by Cesare Dell’Anna. After the great success of its first album, which is named after the band, Zina presents: “Afreeque”, featuring artists coming from Salento, Sardinia, Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco and Palestine. Cesare Dell’Anna has composed and arranged the whole album, which is the result of collaborations with several African and Apulian musicians.
Zina represents a trip which guides us from the desert’s boundless space to the Salento plains, from a metropolitan atmosphere to the magic Mediterranean landscape. It creates new mingled acoustics, a fusion evoking traditional Moroccan and Senegalese rhythms, jazz melodies, rap, reggae and dub sounds.
Zina is a music formula based on the mutual relation among the musicians involved in the project, who are able to adapt to a new environment while still keeping alive their own culture. The lyrics deal with social topics regarding both their homeland and the country they are living in at present. In this age, when words such as “welcoming” and “tolerance” seem to be meaningless, Zina has chosen its own integration route, channelling a number of musical traditions into the same project.
In the album you will find Amadou Faye’s griŏt songs; the Palestinian DAM’s rap composed during a summer at the Albania Hotel in the Salento countryside; the rap of GiamP and Cesare Dell’Anna, the Moroccan singer Rachid Sannane’s French-Turinese lyrics; the Tunisian Marzuk Mejri’s vocal melodies mixed up with the style of the Senegalese singers Idrissa Sarr, Afrobamba, Assan Diop.
Free style and melodic performances are the hallmark of the band’s vocalists, conducted by the trumpet player Cesare Dell’Anna and accompanied by Stefano Valenzano on bass, Egidio Rondinone on the drums, Mauro Tre on the keyboards, Mario Spiros Rugge on the guitar, Giancarlo Dell’Anna , Davide Arena and Luca Manno on the woodwind and brass.
Special guests are: Claudio “Cavallo” Giagnotti, Dj Gruff and the singer/trumpet player Riccardo Pittau.
Zina plays with the assimilation of new lifestyles merged with traditional ways of living in order to create a modern interpretation of music and a particular musical alchemy.
This album comes from a welcoming culture; it has been dedicated to all people with no homeland and to all war victims, especially the ones in Africa.
A share of the profits will be set aside to support Emergency children’s hospital Mayo, in the suburbs of Khartoum in Sudan.


ZinA gruppo musicale guidato da Cesare Dell’Anna, dopo il grande successo ottenuto con il primo lavoro discografico omonimo, presenta la pubblicazione del cd “Afreeque”, nel marzo 2009.
Il cd vede la partecipazione di numerosi musicisti provenienti dal Salento, Sardegna, Senegal, Tunisia, Marocco e Palestina.

ZinA è un viaggio che ci guida dagli spazi infiniti del deserto fino alle pianure del Salento, dalle atmosfere metropolitane, alle magie musicali che abbracciano le terre che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo creando nuove commistioni e sonorità… Progetto aperto di Cesare Dell’Anna, che nasce dall’incontro di alcuni musicisti africani e pugliesi: una fusione che evoca i ritmi della tradizione magrebina, senegalese e le melodie della musica jazz, i suoni del rap, del reggae, del dub.
ZinA e’ una formula musicale che gioca sull’interrelazione dei musicisti coinvolti nel progetto con la loro capacità di adattarsi al territorio pur non dimenticando la propria cultura. Così anche i testi parlano di temi sociali particolarmente legati alla terra africana e a quella che li accoglie. In un periodo storico in cui i termini “accoglienza”, “tolleranza” sembra si stiano dimenticando, ZinA segue il suo percorso di integrazione, coinvolgendo nel disco cantanti professionisti e non.
“Afreeque” sono i canti griŏt di Amadou Faye; il rap dei palestinesi DAM, ospiti in un’estate nella campagna salentina di Albania Hotel; sono i testi rap franco-torinesi del marocchino Rachid Sannane; sono le melodie vocali del Tunisino Marzuk Mejri, che incontrano lo stile del cantante senegalese Idriffa Sarr.
Nel live, le interpretazioni free style e melodiche, che caratterizzano i vocalist della formazione, sono diretti dal trombettista Cesare Dell’Anna ed accompagnati da Stefano Valenzano al basso,Egidio Rondinone alla batteria e Mauro Tre alle tastiere.
ZinA gioca con l’assimilazione di stili di vita che si mescolano con la tradizione, per creare una moderna chiave di lettura della musica, ed un particolare “metissage” musicale..
